Are You Precise Enough to Master the Art of Cannabis Confectionery?
March Madness: The Sour Yuzu Drop Challenge
Calling all cannabis enthusiasts, kitchen wizards, and adventurous makers! This March, the Bite Me Cannabis Club is throwing down the gauntlet with a challenge that will test your precision, patience, and passion for the perfect durable edible. Introducing the Sour Yuzu Drop Challenge – a battle of skill, creativity, and a little bit of luck. Will you rise to the occasion, or will the yuzu gods laugh in your face? Let’s find out.
The Backstory: A Recipe That Doesn’t Play Nice
A while ago asked the community for ideas of a durable edible that he could bring to an event he was attending. This edible needed to withstand some elements, lack of refrigerations, couldn’t be too perishable. Naturally, I thought a hard candy would do the trick and I sought to find a recipe that not only had the properties of a hard candy but wasn’t too difficult to make, ie. no specialty ingredients or equipment.
I flipped through Monica Lo’s (former podcast guest!) Weed Gummies Cookbook and found the Sour Yuzu Drops. With only 8 easy to find ingredients, reasonable hands on time (25 minutes) and no fancy equipment required (beyond a candy thermometer), it was exactly what I was looking for.
I’ve tried making these drops three times. Three. Times. I had even set up the camera to record the process for a club workshop. Each attempt ended in disaster. The first batch I burned the sugar, the second batch seized up like cement, and the third batch… well, let’s just say it tasted like regret. But here’s the thing: I’m not giving up. And neither should you. Because when you finally nail this recipe, the payoff is chef’s kiss perfection. To be clear, I have made plenty of recipes successfully from Monica’s wonderful book.
That’s why we’re turning this recipe into a challenge. It’s time to rally the Bite Me Cannabis Club community, share our triumphs and failures, and maybe – just maybe – crown a Sour Yuzu Drop Champion.
The Challenge
The Sour Yuzu Drop Challenge is all about precision. This recipe doesn’t forgive sloppy measurements, distracted stirring, or impatience. It demands focus, attention to detail, and a willingness to learn from your mistakes. Here’s what you’ll need to do:
1. Get the Recipe: Grab the recipe in the community or get a copy of Monica Lo’s Weed Gummies Cookbook.
2. Gather Your Tools: You’ll need a silicone mold (the cuter, the better), a candy thermometer, silicone spatula, small saucepan and measuring spoons/cups. No eyeballing measurements here – this is science, people!
3. Infuse Your Oil: The recipe calls for cannabis-infused tincture. Pro tip: leave out the cannabis tincture the first time you try this recipe. This is always wise if you’re working with a new recipe or technique.
4. Follow the Steps: This is where the magic (or chaos) happens. Heat your ingredients to the exact right temperature. Stir with the focus of a Zen master. Pour into your molds with the steady hand of a surgeon. And for the love of all that is holy, don’t forget the citric acid coating.
5. Document Your Journey: Take photos, videos, or notes. Share your process with the Bite Me Cannabis Club community. Did you nail it on the first try? Did you have to scrap a batch and start over? We want to see it all.
Why This Sour Yuzu Drop Challenge?
You might be wondering, “Why this recipe? Why now?” Well, here’s the thing: the Sour Yuzu Drops are a microcosm of everything that makes cannabis cooking so rewarding – and so frustrating. They’re a reminder that even the simplest recipes can humble us. They’re a test of our ability to adapt, troubleshoot, and persevere. And when you finally get it right, they’re a celebration of the sweet (and sour) rewards of your hard work.
Plus, let’s be real: these drops are delicious. The bright, tangy flavour of yuzu paired with a crunchy goodness is a match made in edible heaven. If you can master this recipe, you’ll have a crowd-pleasing treat that’s perfect for sharing (or hoarding, no judgment here).
