Too High? Your Emergency Guide
We’ve all been there, or we know someone who has. You ate the edible, waited “long enough,” decided it wasn’t working, ate another one… and now here we are. First of all, take a breath. You are going to be completely fine. Second, I put together nine solid tips to help you (or a suffering friend) get through when you’re too high.
Getting too high on edibles is one of the most common and uncomfortable experiences for cannabis users, but the good news is it is always temporary and always manageable. Here are the 9 tricks you can try when you get too high, all in one place so you can bookmark it for emergencies.

Let’s walk through each one a little more. The first thing to do is simply find a cozy, quiet spot and lie down. This sounds obvious but it really does help your nervous system settle. Pair that with some intentional breathing using the 4-7-8 method: breathe in for four counts, hold for seven, and exhale slowly for eight. It sounds simple but it works fast.
On the snack front, reach for something sweet. Fruit juice, honey, candy, whatever you have on hand. Sweet foods can help counteract that overwhelming feeling. And here is one people always raise an eyebrow at: grab your pepper mill. Chewing a peppercorn, rolling it around in your mouth or even giving the grinder a sniff has been said to help bring you back down. Just have some tissues nearby because it might make you sneeze.
If you have CBD in the house, now is a great time to use it. CBD is known for its anti-anxiety properties and may naturally work against THC. This one is worth testing before you get too high because it can amplify the effects of THC in some people, which is obviously not what you want!
Sometimes distraction is the best medicine. Put on a comedy special, play your favorite playlist, or call a friend. If you are feeling up to it, a gentle walk can also work wonders. Just throw on your sunglasses and nobody will ever know. And if your body is holding tension, a warm shower can really help melt that away.
When all else fails, just try to sleep. If your mind is too busy to wind down, cycle back through the earlier tips until you feel calm enough to drift off. You will likely wake up a little groggy, but honestly that is the worst of it. Cannabis is remarkably safe, and this too shall pass.
If getting too high has happened more than once, it might be worth revisiting dosing and onset time so you can avoid this again in the future. Getting the dose right really is the key to a good experience every single time.

FAQ On 9 Tricks To Try When You Get Too High
How long does being too high on edibles actually last?
It varies depending on how much you consumed, your body weight, metabolism, and tolerance. In most cases the peak intensity passes within two to four hours, but you may feel residual effects for up to eight hours or more. The best thing you can do is stay calm, try the tips above, and remind yourself it will end.
Why does sweet food help when you are too high?
Sugar can help stabilize blood sugar levels, which often drop when THC kicks in and contributes to feelings of dizziness or anxiety. Eating or drinking something sweet gives your body a quick energy source and can take the edge off.
Does the peppercorn trick actually work?
Many people swear by it. Black pepper contains a terpene called beta-caryophyllene, which may interact with the same receptors as cannabis and help dial down the intensity of a high. It is not a guaranteed fix, but it is free, it is in most kitchens, and it is absolutely worth trying.
Is it dangerous to get too high on edibles?
No. While it can feel really uncomfortable and even scary in the moment, cannabis has an excellent safety profile. There are no known cases of fatal cannabis overdose. The experience is temporary and you will be okay. Focus on comfort and calm rather than panic.
What is the best way to avoid getting too high in the first place?
Dosing is everything with edibles. Start very low (5mg or under if you are new to it), wait at least 90 minutes to two hours before considering more, and avoid mixing with alcohol.
