And if you're new here, you're in for a treat this week. You're in for a treat every week, literally, because this is a show about edibles. But this one is not an edible that you're going to ingest. It's an edible, I guess, that you're going to slather on your skin and just look and feel better just by the association of having cannabis on your face.
Marge (00:02:23) - Now, I've been using face oils for quite some time. I'll get into that in a minute. But before we do, there's a couple of things I want to cover. First of all, is a review. Yes, I got another review recently, and I love getting these because it really makes me feel like there are people with names attached to them out there listening. And this review is entitled Phenomenal. Marge, you are an absolute inspiration. Your open minded approach is exactly what this industry needs. Your ethics forward approach used to relay your message allows for an easy approach to the regulated market, DIY cannabis experiments, and creates a passion to share what we all learn as this industry is ever evolving. Looking forward to many more episodes, and that comes from Mickey Double Dollar Sign from Canada. Thank you so much for sharing that review. If you haven't left one yet, consider leaving a review. If that is, if you're so moved by something like that, it really does help make the show more discoverable.
Marge (00:03:28) - Podcasts are growing in popularity, as you probably know, because if you're listening to this, I'm sure you consume other wonderful podcasts as well, and it can really help a podcast to stand out when it has great reviews behind it. And so far I have amazing reviews from my listeners, which just says a lot about the people listening to this show that you guys are all cool, you're all cool people, and those are the kind of listeners I'd like to have under the umbrella of Bite Me, the show about edibles, where we are all here to learn and to grow and to take control of our high life. The Things you can make with hemp. Section of the podcast that I've really been enjoying doing just because I find out so incredible the number of things that you can make with hemp. I mean, seriously, it's it's kind of mind blowing. And this week. The thing you can make with hemp. And yes, I'm speaking very slowly and deliberately to really create a sense of anticipation. Our batteries, hemp based batteries can be made at 1/1000 of the cost of our current energy systems.
Marge (00:04:39) - They can also outperform current energy storing technologies, a replacement to hazardous and non environmentally friendly battery units. Hemp batteries could help heal our planet. And I love this idea because, of course, as everything goes electric, I'm thinking cars. I'm seeing more and more electric cars out there these days or hybrids, combination thereof. And they're obviously getting in popularity because people are wanting to help reduce their carbon footprint, rely less on gasoline. And of course, we're moving into a real wireless society, which means everything that we use is powered by batteries. But we don't often stop to think about the impact that these batteries have. I used to really, really want an electric car myself, and I used to really want a Tesla because it seemed like, well, for one, they seem to have some pretty cool design features. They're really sleek, futuristic looking, they're attractive cars way out of my budget. Podcasting does not yet pay off that well. Maybe one day, but it's really as I dug into it a bit more, the idea that the batteries themselves require a energy intensive to create, and then once they're spent, they just end up in the landfill along with all the rest of the garbage that we're creating as human beings.
Marge (00:06:04) - And so from that perspective, it didn't necessarily seem. As environmentally friendly, perhaps as they were first touted to be. But I'm not sure from what I can understand, there's not necessarily hemp based batteries out on the market for consumers to buy just yet. But researchers at BMP Research Corp., this is one of a few that I found have developed a lithium sulfur battery that is more cost effective, has a higher performance and is more recyclable than lithium ion batteries thanks to a helpful material hemp. The company uses carbonized hemp rather than heavy metals like cobalt or nickel, making batteries that are lightweight and durable. While many researchers globally have been looking into ways to use graphene for better EV batteries, it is still an expensive material that cannot be scaled up for mass production. Hemp is better. A lower cost solution Hemp's durability can help the cathode withstand hundreds of cycles of contraction and expansion. Hemp's porous structure can help trap the poly sulfides from shutting shuttling to the anode. Now some of that gets pretty technical, but obviously the issues that come along with the mining of some of the components that goes into batteries such as cobalt in particular, they have harsh consequences on their communities, including increased violence, food or water insecurity, health challenges.
Marge (00:07:26) - Working conditions are often unethical and dangerous for workers. Mining for heavy metals, including cobalt, can also pollute soil water, air contaminate food supplies, increased risk of respiratory and respiratory and reproductive health issues. I mean, all of this is all part of the battery making process that we have come to really rely on. So it's pretty exciting that hemp is also providing another way to reduce the the impact that some of our activities have. And this is why I think cannabis and hemp should be fully embraced by lawmakers, because there is so much potential, so much potential that. Can be realized through the use of hemp in these different types of technologies. I mean, how many things have you covered so far in this segment on this show of things that can be made with hemp? And I love the idea that they can use. Hemp to make a better battery. So let's embrace that and I will link to the a couple of the articles that I found about that in the show notes, so you can check it out for yourself.
Marge (00:08:32) - But very soon, perhaps hemp can be used to power your cell phone, power and electric vehicle power wireless technology that exists within your own home. Who knows? This week's recipe. Now, not really a recipe in the traditional sense because obviously most of the recipes I do on here, most, but not all. I've done several body care recipes before, but this one is an oil that I put on my face and of course I have done intimacy oils on here that are used specifically for for sex. And I've used a massage oil that is actually recommended for massage and not sex. But I have yet to do a face oil, which is really surprising because I have been using face oils on my face for quite some time and I use it on the skin like on my facial skin in the mornings after cleansing and toning. If I happen to be doing a toner because I sort of go off and on those depending on how I'm feeling and it makes my skin look and feel great, it locks in moisture, even though I do tend to have skin that's on more of the oily side.
Marge (00:09:45) - It doesn't make it feel greasy. It absorbs really well leave feeling soft. For some folks that might be too heavy, especially if you have really oily skin. But I don't often find that oils make oily skin worse. In fact, sometimes it's when you strip your skin of its oils that your skin reacts by producing even more oil. So that's something to consider. Now, I'm not a skincare expert by any means, and I have do have a couple of books on my shelf, one by Jamie Evans, who does a lot of CBD based recipes and there's some skincare recipes in there and I will link to a favorite skincare guru of mine, Charlotte Palmer. I believe her name is if I have that name Incorrect. I am so sorry, but I'll put it in the show notes because I love her and her skin is just luminous and she does have a product actually that she helped co-create. I'll link to that in the show notes too that does have CBD in it. Now. I think it does ship to Canada now, but I really love their approach.
Marge (00:10:48) - So obviously. Having cannabinoids in your skincare products is not anything new, but it is new for me in some ways. So if your skin if this is something that you might be interested in, it's a super simple recipe. So what I was doing for quite a while was I using something called the everyday oil, and I actually use the same bottle of it. I loved it enough to go from buying like the 30 mil bottle when I first started out, or however large it was, it wasn't very large to a much larger bottle. But then the sort I was buying it from stopped carrying it. And then that same store also went out of business, which is really sad because I did like to frequent that store and I was running low on this everyday oil and I needed an alternative because I couldn't pick it up where I used to. And I think you can still buy it. I found it online, but it's an American based company. And for me, sometimes having things shipped to Canada, depending on how much shipping they do, quote unquote internationally, because it's kind of funny that even though we're in North American, we have these free trade agreements and all this stuff.
Marge (00:11:48) - Some of this stuff can still be considered international shipping and they will charge up the wazoo for it. And I have to consider duty charges as well. Sometimes you get dinged at the door when they, you know, slap an extra however many dollars on that package to have it because it got shipped. But anyway, depending on the company and how much shipping they do, the rates for shipping can be pretty astronomical. And of course I'm also dealing a lot of the times in US dollars and that's not always favorable for us Canadians. So anyway, I was running low and I thought I need something that I can also use. And I thought, why not make my own? I mean, it was the everyday oil is a lovely oil. It's a simple collection of, of organic oils and essential oils. And I thought I could reproduce something similar for myself. And then I could also add some infused ingredients so that I could reap the benefits of the cannabinoids on my skin. And I did a quick search because I didn't really do this before I made the oil myself.
Marge (00:12:46) - But I've been using it for quite some time now, like I said, a few months at least, because a little bit goes a long way, of course. But they've some of the Internet research that I found suggested that cannabis topically applied to the skin, can have a few different benefits, including locking in moisture and it helps plump the skin. So skin appears smooth, youthful and radiant. I mean. Maybe I feel like my skin feels smooth, youthful and radiant some of the time, depending on how good of a sleep I got the night before. It's really depended on if I was having some drinks. Drinks are often terrible for your skin and can make you look kind of puffy. We doesn't do that, of course, but genetics also helps a lot too. But it also balances the sebum production to control oilier acne prone skin. When applied topically, it quickly penetrates and pores, so it's less likely to cause congested skin. And I do find I mean, at my age I'm not really getting acne anymore, but I do occasionally get the odd breakout, but for the most part I don't find my skin feels overly oily part of me, and I've been dealing with oily skin my entire entire life.
Marge (00:14:01) - I was going to say adult life, but even as a teenager, I had pretty oily skin. And unfortunately, I was also sometimes called Pizza Face at certain points in my teenage years. And God, God bless him. But my parents were part of a multi-level marketing scheme. For those of you who remember Amway or perhaps had a loved one or someone close to you involved in Amway, which then became Kwik Star for a bit, which then also reverted back to Amway. Well, my parents are pretty involved in that. They actually have made some money from it, too. And I will say a lot of the products, of course, I'm probably totally biased, but a lot of the products did have a. A concentration. They had a lot of content, concentrated products so that you could sort of make them go farther, dilute them and that kind of thing, and an environmental consciousness about them. So they tried to use ingredients that wouldn't, you know, pollute your waterways when you're washing it down the drain and all that kind of thing, which I really do think was ahead of its time at the time.
Marge (00:15:02) - But my mom liked to buy the skin care products that was designed by this company that were not geared to teenage skin dealing with a lot of breakouts. It was for probably more mature skin. My mother had me at the age of 37 years old, which back then was not common. She was never married before and she had met my father. So it was super uncommon for people back then to have kids at a at a really late age in life now. It's like nobody blinks an eye if you do that. But of course, sometimes they weren't necessarily as equipped to deal with teenagers. And my mother, by the time I was a teenager, she had very different skin care concerns from me. And I did go through a lot of years using Amway artistry, skin care products. When I should have been using, I don't know, Neutrogena, whatever the heck the popular shit was back in the day. Clean and clear. I forget I still see some of those at the drugstore. Luckily, I kind of grew out of it and I didn't suffer really any acne scars, and I feel pretty fortunate to have pretty nice skin now.
Marge (00:16:13) - But a lot of it's because of some of these facial oils I use. The last thing it also says some of the stuff that I found online suggested that. Cannabinoids in your skin care can also calm skin redness, itching or flaky skin associated with inflammatory skin conditions. Now, I do recall Andrea from revealed cannabis suggesting in her from the expert segment and from the podcast episode that I did with her and Corinne of the Cannabis Coaching Institute that she infuses a big vat of of olive oil and keeps it in her kitchen so that it can be applied topically for things like bug bites and itchy skin and that kind of thing. So that checks out. So after all that, it only seemed natural that I include some cannabis in my formulation because I mean, I use it topically on my chronically sore back with wonderful results. Some mornings my back is so goddamn stiff when I'm first getting up and one of the first things I do is I get up and I. Usually after I have my shower in the morning, I will put a very generous amount of infused topical.
Marge (00:17:26) - Actually, the one that I made for this show a long time ago as as the recipe sent to me by a listener, Tracy and I infused that and use that on my back every single day. And I swear to God, it saves me my back. I wish I could say it was going to get better, but I've been told by the doctors that some shit's just wearing out and it's just going to be like this for probably the rest of my life and either stay the same for the foreseeable future or it could get a lot worse very quickly. Obviously, I'm hoping for the former rather than the latter, but the cannabis infused cannabis topical makes a huge difference in my ability to go about my day and just do whatever I normally do without having to change too much. It's just first thing in the morning when I'm just getting out, but it's just like, fuck, I feel like I'm 100 years old. So I'm a big believer in topicals. And who doesn't want their skin to appear more smooth, youthful, radiant, plump, all these things, even if it's placebo.
Marge (00:18:18) - Sometimes I just feel luxurious putting an oil on my skin. There's something about it that makes it feel really, really good. And I will say I always follow up a facial oil with a really good sunscreen of some kind because you hear it all the time. Wear your sunscreen, wear you sunscreen where your sunscreen doesn't really matter if you have smooth, radiant skin, if you've got some damage. Not really. So I wear that all the time, too. Just full disclosure. So this wasn't going to be exactly like the everyday oil that I was using, but I found online a three ingredient face oil that was purported to be anti-aging. And I am of the age I'm trying to age gracefully, but also help myself out a little bit. So I thought, let's try this one. And I really like it because I think it was actually four ingredients by the time I was done with it. But the fun thing about this recipe was that the author lists several oils that you can use based on your desired outcome, and it's sort of like a choose your own adventure.
Marge (00:19:18) - And what did she have here? I opted for jojoba oil rosehip oil infused MCT oil in some lemongrass essential oil, and in it the jojoba is great for anti-aging, perfect for all skin types, including acne prone skin. You can use half argan and half jojoba to. And the argan was basically the same. Great for anti-aging, perfect for all skin types, including acne prone skin. I believe when I made this I did include an argan oil because I happen to have some I've made lots of other body care products in the past, so I have like a whole tote full of stuff for when I want to get creative in that way. But she also suggests things like sweet almond oil, apricot kernel, oil, grapeseed oil, avocado oil, hemp seed oil. The only reason I didn't really go the hemp seed oil because I thought, Oh, wouldn't it be kind of cool to like infuse hemp seed oil? But hemp seed oil has a color and a scent and it doesn't have a really long shelf life either.
Marge (00:20:16) - You usually have to keep it refrigerated after you open it and it can go rancid faster than a lot of other oils that you'll find. So, you know, I'm going to stick to just consuming my hemp seeds in my smoothies every day and sprinkling them on my salads because I feel like that's a better use. And any time you're making skin care, you just don't want to be putting rancid oils on your skin. And I feel like that's far more likely. But anyway, you can choose what you want to do. The next ingredient I tried was the rosehip oil best for regenerating skin cells and is known for its firming anti-aging abilities, best for dry, normal and aging skin. So I guess I have neither dry nor normal. But I do have aging skin and maybe my skin's become a little more normal as time goes on because they do say that as your skin ages, I think it can dry out a little bit more. But. It seems quite nice. Um. She just suggests a few other ones here.
Marge (00:21:14) - Tamina Oil Borage Oil Evening. Primrose oil and neem oil. The third ingredient. And in my particular instance I added a fourth. But the third ingredient are basically essential oils to add. And she suggests lavender, camomile, rose, Ponderosa, lemongrass or rosemary. I have to admit that I'm not. I'm pretty sure I just had the lemongrass. I don't know why I wasn't using my journal for this one. I really should have. I've used it for a bunch of stuff by now, and if you don't know, I have a the Bite Me edibles journal where you can jot down recipes, you're making edibles, you're trying all that kind of thing. And this would have been really good because I didn't actually write it down. But I think from the smell of it, I just used the lemongrass because I happen to have some I love the smell of lemongrass. And it says brightening and toning best for normal, oily or acne prone skin. So I probably want that root and I love the smell of it.
Marge (00:22:09) - I also included the MCT oil and I made this MCT oil in the two oil infuser that I have. And this particular time I posted a video to my social media, if you want to check it out there. But it's also going to be in the show notes because I use already vaped cannabis in the oil infuser, which makes it super easy because that weed is already described. Not that I necessarily mind taking the extra step. I have an ardent as well, and the Levo two oil infuser does infuse in the device too. So you can put your cannabis in the pod and carb first and then do the infusion. It's super easy. You don't really have to. Like once you finish the carb, you can just add your oil into the same reservoir and just press a different button and it's going to infuse for you. But the big advantage to using that dry herb vaporizer is that it's already deep carb, so it's ready to use when you need it and you're stretching your weed that much farther as well because you've been able to consume it by vaporization and now you can consume it a second time for your infusions.
Marge (00:23:12) - So I usually just keep a jar of it. Like that's where I put all the spent material in a jar that's labeled. And then when it starts to get full, I start to think about using some of that for some infusions. So that's what I did in this particular case. And I'll include the recipe that I made on the Web page or I'll include the recipe that I made plus the Web page that provided the inspiration, because she includes some of the benefits of each of these that I was talking about. But then you can decide how you want to customize your own formulation. So if you're like, Yeah, I really don't like the smell of lemongrass or whatever the case might be, then you can choose something else that might work better, or you can just pick something else. If you are familiar with different essential oils or oils and how they work on your skin. I like how she creates it. Two. The author of this recipe because it's not super tricky or scientific, honestly, it's just fill your jar a half to three quarters of the way with the base ingredient, which in this particular instance was the jojoba oil.
Marge (00:24:12) - And then you add it almost full with the second ingredient, which in my case was the rosehip oil. And then this is where I changed it a little bit. So I think I must have just filled the jar for half with the base ingredient. But then you fill it close to the top with the third one, which in my case was the infused MCT oil. And then I finish it off with a little bit of the lemongrass for some nice scent and the brightening aspects of that as well. And that's pretty much it. I'd use the same jar, the same bottle for the everyday oil for this particular one. And it worked really great. But any kind of glass jar with a dropper top would be quite nice for this. And I always prefer glass two because it just seems that much more luxurious, doesn't it? But I'll also include another website because sometimes I know some people probably like a little more sciencey kind of specific recipes when it comes to skincare and for a lot of skincare recipes, if you're not going to be a little more, if you're not going to be more precise, they're just not going to work out very well.
Marge (00:25:14) - But there's a website that I've used many times over the last few years called Humble and Me. I think she's actually a Canadian content creator, but she has a whole website full of different formulations for all kinds of stuff Skincare, body care, hair care, makeup. She covers it all and I've done several of them for personal use, so she does a whole bunch of stuff. It's really cool. And a lot of the ingredients that you would use for this can be sourced on Amazon or a soap making supply store. I've used both. You can get really creative with this kind of stuff. You can use it on your face. Sometimes I use it on my body too. I tend to use more of a body butter on my body, which is thicker and heavier and doesn't absorb as easily. But I actually kind of like that skin feel. I know that's not for everybody, but I love it. I did actually do different body butter for Christmas gifts for people that doesn't have that sort of greasy skin feel.
Marge (00:26:05) - Also from that humble on my website. So, you know, it doesn't have to be like that. But if you like this kind of thing, you'll probably love this oil. And I make a coconut oil and olive oil based body butter that my husband Chris uses as an aftershave and hair gel. So you can actually get really creative with some of these homemade body care products and how you use them. They're often not just a one use only type of thing. This could probably also work as a massage oil. You can get really, really creative with how you use these, but if you try it out, I would love to hear what you think and how you customize the formulation and how you tried it. And if you find it helpful even on your face or on your skin. And if you listen to this episode and you enjoyed it and you think you know somebody, another skincare lover out there who might enjoy it, then please share it with them as well. You can always semi email, let me know how you found it or send a message to the podcast hotline as well.
Marge (00:27:02) - I always love hearing your voices because this is a voice medium and that sort of falls in line with that whole thing. So please don't be shy and you can always stay up to date with news events, questions for guests, giveaways when they come up, and all this kind of all that kind of stuff with the Bite Me edibles enthusiast email newsletter that helps keep these episode timeless and then finally consider using the products and services on the Marge Recommends page because that really helps to keep this show going. I am your host, Marge, and until next time my friends stay high.
