Welcome, friends. On June 1st in Whitby, Ontario, six competitors are going to prove exactly how far that moment has come. So You Think You Can Cook With Cannabis: Ontario Edition is a cannabis cooking competition hosted at Ted Reader's The Joint BBQ, presented by ZipMaster Supply Co., and brought to you by KGLTV/KGL Network and Aggressive Organics.

It's part culinary showdown, part community celebration, and entirely the kind of thing we've been waiting to see more of in this country. I've been sitting down with judges and competitors ahead of the event, and what I keep finding is exactly what you'd expect from people who take both cannabis and cooking seriously. Real craft. Real intention. Real food.

Michelle Litvack

Michelle Litvak is the founder and CEO of DOM JACKSON Craft Cannabis, a brand she acquired and scaled to 14 SKUs across six provinces in her first year of ownership.

We talked ahead of the competition about what she's actually looking for in a plate, and her answer was refreshingly direct: elevate the dish, make the infusion intentional, and never give her a paté. Michelle isn't judging through a chef's lens, she's judging as a consumer who has spent serious time in this industry. That combination is more useful to a panel than it might sound.

Michelle made it clear that she can't hide her reactions, so chefs would do well to note her priorities: presentation with a story behind it, cannabis that doesn't announce itself on the palate, no distillate, and absolutely no liver. She wants every plate to make sense, course to course, and she wants to know why the chef made the choices they made.

Ted Reader is the Godfather of the Grill, and if you don't already know why, you're about to find out. He's also the reason this competition has a home, because So You Think You Can Cook With Cannabis is being held right at his establishment, The Joint BBQ in Whitby.

Having the venue owner sitting on the judging panel is not a small thing. Ted has standards for what comes out of his kitchen, and those standards are going to be in the room when the dishes are presented.

Ted has been cooking for nearly 50 years and brings a simple standard to the table: use salt and pepper, do the math on your doses, and make sure the food is actually delicious. His view is that cannabis infusion should build the experience slowly, not knock the judges out. "You don't want to take them so far beyond that they don't come back," he said. That's not a figure of speech. That's the judging criteria.

Adam Vandermay

If you're a member of the Bite Me Cannabis Club, Adam Vandermay needs no introduction. He came on the podcast back in 2025 and the conversation was one of those ones that kept going long after we stopped recording. He's been a regular contributor to the Club and if you've spent any time in there you already know the kind of thoughtfulness he brings to cannabis and food.

What makes Adam interesting to watch isn't just the technique. It's the intention behind every decision on the plate. Cannabis cooking done well isn't about masking a flavour or loading a dish. It's craft. Adam understands that.

Adam's philosophy is built on one word: intention. His biggest red flag in cannabis cooking is guessing. He infuses finishing elements exclusively, sauces, glazes, pesto, so he can control both flavour and milligrams down to the tablespoon. He caps private dining menus at 25mg total over five courses, and he'll fight you on the idea that cooking with cannabis means cooking in cannabis. It doesn't. It means knowing exactly what's in every bite.

Chef Mellisa is a Toronto-based personal chef and cannabis cook whose journey with infused food began with her own medical recovery and grew into a full practice under the name MJ Cocojuana, built alongside her mother and dedicated to helping people use cannabis with intention.

Mellisa came into our conversation carrying a lot of weight this year. After the death of her sister at 42, she stepped back from cooking. This competition is how she's stepping back in. She said yes because it felt like a sign, and she's dedicating every dish to her sister. That context doesn't soften the competition. It sharpens her approach.

Mellisa's approach is built on fusion, flavor balance, and controlled infusion. She infuses sauces and dips rather than the whole dish so her clients control their dose and so food can safely be shared with anyone at the table. She's been cooking alongside some of the city's best chefs for years, and she's taking the judges on what she describes as a journey. She's not telling anyone what it looks like yet.
