The Ultimate Guide to Dosing Cannabis Edibles
Welcome, fellow cannabis enthusiasts! If you’ve ever been curious, or maybe a little nervous, about trying edibles, you’re in the right place. Today, I’m breaking down everything you need to know about dosing cannabis edibles, with actionable tips, expert insights, and a dash of humor because edibles are supposed to be fun.
This guide will help you avoid the dreaded I’m too high scenario and ensure every bite is a delight. Let’s get started!

Listen to this epsiode:
Why Dosing Cannabis Edibles Matters (And Why It’s Tricky)
Edibles are a fantastic way to enjoy cannabis, but they’re also notorious for catching people off guard. Unlike smoking or vaping, edibles take longer to kick in and can deliver a much more intense, longer-lasting high. That’s why proper dosing is absolutely crucial. If you’ve ever consumed too much, you know what I’m talking about!
Here’s the deal:
Edibles are metabolized differently than inhaled cannabis. Your liver converts THC into 11-hydroxy-THC, which is more potent and has a longer duration.
The effects can take anywhere from 45 minutes to 2 hours to fully set in.
Overdoing it can lead to hours of discomfort, anxiety, or just plain weirdness.
But don’t worry! No one has ever died from eating too many edibles. The worst-case scenario is a rough few hours, not a medical emergency. Still, let’s make sure you never have to experience that!
My Five Essential Tips for Dosing Cannabis Edibles
- Start Low and Go Slow
This is the golden rule of edibles, and I can’t stress it enough. If you’re new to edibles, start with a low dose, think 2.5 to 5 mg of THC and work up from there.
Why?
Everyone’s endocannabinoid system (ECS) is unique. What floors your friend might barely register for you, and vice versa. Edibles are easy to overdo because the effects creep up slowly.
Actionable Advice:
If you’re buying from a dispensary, look for products with clear dosing (e.g., 2.5 mg or 5 mg per piece).
If you’re making your own, err on the side of caution. You can always eat more, but you can’t uneat an edible!
Pro Tip:
Don’t be like Bob, who ate a 1000 mg brownie in one go. Trust me, Bob’s night was memorable for all the wrong reasons.
- Wait—Seriously, Wait
Patience is your best friend when it comes to edibles. After you eat your dose, set a timer and wait at least two hours before considering more.
Why?
Edibles can take 45 minutes to 2 hours to fully kick in.
The effects build gradually, and taking more too soon is the #1 reason people get uncomfortably high.
Actionable Advice:
Plan your edible session when you have a free evening or a lazy weekend afternoon.
Distract yourself with a movie, a walk, or a hobby while you wait so you’re not tempted to eat more.
Expert Insight:
If you only wait an hour, you might just be starting to feel the effects. Give it a full two hours before making any decisions about taking more.
- Avoid Mixing with Alcohol
Trying edibles for the first time? Skip the booze. Alcohol and cannabis can amplify each other’s effects, often in unpredictable and unpleasant ways.
Why?
Alcohol increases THC absorption, making the high stronger and potentially overwhelming.
Mixing substances can make it harder to gauge how you’re feeling and what’s causing it.
Actionable Advice:
Save the wine or cocktails for another night.
Focus on enjoying the edible experience on its own, especially if you’re new to it.
- Eat Something First
Don’t dive into edibles on an empty stomach. Having a light snack beforehand can help moderate the onset and intensity of the high.
Why?
Food slows down the absorption of THC, leading to a smoother, more gradual experience.
An empty stomach can make the effects hit harder and faster.
Actionable Advice:
Eat a small meal or snack about 30 minutes before your edible.
Avoid heavy, greasy foods that might upset your stomach.
- Label Your Homemade Edibles
If you’re making edibles at home (and I know many of you are!), always label your creations clearly. This is especially important if you live with others or have kids around.
Why?
Prevents accidental consumption by unsuspecting roommates, friends, or family members.
Helps you keep track of potency and dosing for future reference.
Actionable Advice:
Use masking tape and a marker to label containers with the type of edible, date made, and estimated potency. Store edibles out of reach of children and pets.
Pro Tips for Home Edible Makers
Making your own edibles is rewarding, but dosing can be tricky. Here’s how to get more consistent results:
Consistency is Key: Make your edibles the same way every time. Use the same recipes, portion sizes, and infusion methods.
Track Your Inputs: Record how much cannabis you use, the strain, and the estimated THC content.
Uniform Portions: Use a cookie cutter, mold, or scale to ensure each piece is the same size.
Test on Yourself First: Before sharing with friends, try a small amount yourself to gauge potency.
Perfect Your Go-To Recipe: Having a reliable, well-tested recipe makes it easier to predict effects and share safely.

Final Thoughts: Enjoy Edibles Safely and Confidently
Dosing cannabis edibles doesn’t have to be intimidating. With a little knowledge, patience, and preparation, you can enjoy all the benefits of cannabis edibles without the anxiety of overdoing it. Remember:
- Start low and go slow.
- Wait at least two hours before taking more.
- Avoid mixing with alcohol.
- Eat a light snack beforehand.
- Label your homemade creations.
And most importantly, have fun! Edibles are a wonderful way to explore cannabis, whether you’re looking for relaxation, creativity, pain relief, or just a good night’s sleep.

FAQ: Dosing Cannabis Edibles
1. Why do edibles affect me differently than smoking or vaping?
Edibles are metabolized by your liver, which converts THC into 11-hydroxy-THC, a more potent compound with longer-lasting effects. Unlike inhaling, edibles take 45 minutes to 2 hours to kick in and can feel stronger and last longer.
2. How much THC should I take if I’m new to edibles?
Start low and go slow! Beginners should try 2.5–5 mg of THC or less. Everyone’s tolerance is different, so it’s better to underdo it than overdo it. This is why dosing cannabis edibles is important!
3. How long should I wait before taking more?
Wait at least 2 hours before considering another dose. Edibles take time to fully kick in, and taking more too soon is the #1 cause of uncomfortable experiences.
4. Can I mix edibles with alcohol?
Nope! Alcohol can amplify the effects of THC, making the high stronger and harder to predict. Save the drinks for another time, especially if you’re new to edibles.
5. Should I eat before taking an edible?
Yes! A light snack 30 minutes beforehand helps slow down THC absorption, leading to a smoder, more controlled experience. Avoid heavy or greasy foods, though.
6. What’s the worst that can happen if I take too much?
You won’t die, but you might feel anxious, dizzy, or uncomfortably high for several hours. Stay calm, hydrate, and remind yourself it will pass.
7. How do I dose homemade edibles safely?
- Label everything clearly with potency and date.
- Use consistent recipes and portion sizes.
- Test a small amount yourself before sharing.
- Store securely away from kids and pets.
8. Why do edibles take so long to work?
Your body processes edibles through digestion, which takes longer than inhaling. Effects can take 45 minutes to 2 hours to peak, so patience is key!
9. What if I don’t feel anything after 1 hour?
Wait! The effects might still be building. Taking more too soon can lead to overconsumption. Give it the full 2 hours before deciding.
10. How can I make sure my homemade edibles are evenly dosed?
- Use a scale or molds for uniform portions.
- Track your inputs (e.g., strain, THC content, recipe).
- Test a small piece first to gauge potency.
11. Are there any foods or drinks that can help if I’ve taken too much?
Black pepper (chew or sniff), CBD, or a calming tea may help ease discomfort. Focus on staying hydrated and relaxed.
12. Can I build a tolerance to edibles?
Yes, regular use can increase tolerance. If you find edibles less effective over time, take a break or adjust your dose gradually.
13. Where can I find a reliable edible dosage calculator?
Check out our edible dosage calculator here to help you dial in your perfect dose.
14. What’s the best way to store edibles?
Keep them in a cool, dark place in an airtight container. Always label clearly and store out of reach of children and pets.
15. Can I drive after eating an edible?
No! Edibles can impair your judgment and motor skills for 6+ hours. Plan ahead and stay safe.

Margaret 00:01:54 Hey everyone, welcome back to Bite Me, the show shore boat edibles. I'm your gracious host, Marge. Some people call me Margaret. But Marge is what I've been known as for what seems like way too fucking long. It's definitely not my favorite nickname anyway. Moving on. Today's episode is all about dosing, and you probably know how important dosing is when it comes to edibles, because even if you've never eaten them before, we've all heard stories about how people can get way, way too fucking high when they're ingesting cannabis orally.
Margaret 00:02:31 It affects your body in a completely different way than when you're smoking it, and it creeps up on you too. To make matters worse, so today we're going to help prevent you from ever getting way too high with your edibles. And at the end of the show, we're going to have the top five tips for beginners when it comes to dosing edibles. Stay tuned for that. Now, before we get started, a little word from our sponsors. Okay, I don't have sponsors. So that's it. That brief pause was, I guess you could say the, today's sponsor was silence. Okay, yeah, I know my jokes aren't that funny. Anyway, let's get going. The first thing you need to remember when it comes to edibles is to go low and go slow. There's no shame in taking a little less and then deciding how it's going to affect you, whether you like that feeling or not, and then taking more. That's the smart way to do it. Don't be like Bob out there, who decided he's going to buy some thousand milligram brownie from the local dispensary and decides he needs to eat it all in one shot? Don't be that guy, because they're not going to have a good time.
Margaret 00:03:49 Now, the one thing you can rest assured about is no one has ever died from ingesting edibles. So you're good there. So even if you get way too high and you feel like you're going to die, you won't. It's just not really physically possible. So don't stress on that. But if you keep listening, we are going to give you some tips so that you don't do that. And I guess the first one was like, go low and go slow. Just remember too, that just because your friend Sally ate some, that you will have the same effect because every body is different. The way your body handles THC is going to be different from Sally. So take everything she says with a grain of salt. And if Sally says, oh yeah, I have been eating edibles for two years and I eat this whole cookie, then maybe that's a cue for you to start out with a lot less like a quarter cookie. And there's no shame in that. And your friend Sally, if she's a real friend and not some frenemy, then she'll appreciate that.
Margaret 00:04:50 She'll give you two cookies. You have two to experiment with. That's what real friends do. The other thing to do is to wait. Just if you eat some. Don't rush into eating some more. We all seen those memes. Those. These edibles ain't shit. Memes. We've all seen those. And the basic lesson, all those memes is somebody was saying these edibles ain't shit. And the next thing you know, they are running full speed into a brick wall, which is a comparison to how they'll be feeling the next day. So you should wait at least a couple of hours. If you're trying out edibles and you're trying to figure out a minimum effective dose. Two hours is a pretty good time frame. Edibles, on average, take about 45 minutes to an hour to kick in, and they'll start to creep in from there. If you only wait an hour, you'll only you're only starting to feel the effects of the cannabis at that point. And if you take more than you could get, you could very well get way too fucking high.
Margaret 00:05:50 And that's what you're trying to avoid. Two hours gives you a much better idea of how you're going to be feeling, or what that doses effect is on your body. If you're buying your edibles from a store, that's fantastic. You'll be able to start to experiment. I would suggest starting with like a really low dose, like ten milligrams of THC and working your way up from there. And it's nice because that gives you sort of context. You take that ten milligram edible product and you like it. So you can do another ten and another ten until you find that minimum effective dose that works for you. Unfortunately, if you're making your own at home, you don't always have that luxury because you don't necessarily know, you know, if you get if you're making the the infusions with weed that you got from your friend who grew it in his backyard in the sunshine. Well, it's a lot harder to calculate the dosing that way. There are things you can there are calculations you can do to try and figure it out.
Margaret 00:06:46 they're all basically only estimates and don't necessarily mean a whole lot. So you're probably better off taking making a few tricks for the home chef. These are pro tips that I use every day, every time I'm making edibles. Pro tip number one is make your shit the same way every time. That's probably the biggest thing that I do, especially for those favorite recipes. I guess I could also be pro tip number two. Figure out a go to recipe. Obviously we always like to experiment, but if you have a go to recipe over time you'll have perfected it to the point where you know how it's going to affect you. Because when you're making a lot of edibles at home, if you're making a batch of cookies, they're not necessarily all going to be exactly the same as far as THC content, but you have a pretty good idea if you make it the same way every time. For what? What this means for me is when I'm making that butter, I use the same amount of wheat in it.
Margaret 00:07:42 I keep a note in my phone so that every time I make a new butter, and if I change it up by adding a little bit more, a little bit less, I have a general idea of how much wheat is going into every batch of butter or oil that I'm making, and when I make the cookies, I follow the same. My favorite cookie recipe. I always use the same cookie cutter, so they're all about a uniform size. All these little things make it so that my cookies have become very consistent. And these are the items that I give away to friends and family, because that way I feel a lot more confident recommending how much they start out with if they haven't had edibles before. And you know, I'm just doing God's work. That's all that is. And you can too. You can share the joy, but figure out a recipe that you really like, make it the same every time. Have it be consistent and test it on yourself first. You are your own guinea pig and your friends and family will thank you for it.
Margaret 00:08:43 so as I was saying, the five tips for beginners when it comes to edibles. And perhaps if you're a seasoned edible user, these tips are nice reminder if you're introducing new friends and family to edibles, or if you just recently had an experience. Because sometimes you get cocky and think, hey, I can handle that, and you realize, oh shit, maybe I can't. So tip number one we've talked about already start low. If you're new, start with ten milligrams. If you're buying it from the store. If you're making an infusion at home, always on the side of caution and go as low as possible. Work your way up from there. Part of the fun in trying edibles out this way is the experimentation you get to put on your legs, crazy scientist hat and test some things out on yourself. So start low. tip number two go slow. Again, that is, wait a minimum of two hours before you take more. If you're going to do more in one, in one sitting, in one evening or day or whatever.
Margaret 00:09:47 Tip number three and this is a big one. No booze. Experimenting with edibles. That's not the time to decide. You're going to have a few beers with the boys, or going out for drinks with friends or anything like that. Leave the booze out of it for for a little while until you figured out what your minimum effective dose is, and even then you got to bring it in slow because they do have an effect on each other. It's kind of like also when you've had too much to drink and then you decide to smoke a bowl or something like that. Think about how that makes you feel. Not too good, Yeah. You don't want to do that. Personally, I do like an edible with a glass of wine sometimes, but I'm pretty experienced at this point, and I know how that's going to affect my body, so just be smart about it. Leave the booze out until you've figured figured out how this stuff is going to affect you personally. Tip number four eat some food.
Margaret 00:10:48 Sometimes having a light snack before you enjoy your edibles is just what you need to have your belly a little bit full and slow the onset of your high and it makes it more enjoyable, I think. Who doesn't like a nice light snack before an edibles high? Funnily enough, for me, I don't know about other people who are listening. I don't really get the munchies while I'm high on edibles if I smoke weed. Holy shit, I better have lots of snacks on hand, but the edibles don't really give me the munchies, which is kind of interesting. So having a nice light snack beforehand, you know, keeps me satisfied. Number five. This one's super important. We haven't really talked about this yet. Label your creations. Label them. So if you make a batch of cookies and you don't put a label on it, and somebody inadvertently eats one of those cookies and gets really high, you're the asshole, not the person for putting their hand in the cookie jar when they didn't ask first.
Margaret 00:11:52 You don't want to. You don't want to have that happen, especially if you had kids in your house. I mean, that kind of goes without saying. I'm sure most parents realize they need to keep those those homemade creations under lock and key. But if you have roommates or parents who might be dropping by or anything like that, yeah, you just want to make sure that people are aware of what they're getting themselves into before they eat something, because that's just what nice friends do. So do you have any funny dosing stories? Do you have questions or comments? I would love to hear them, answer them and give you a shout out on the show. And if I pick one of yours, I might have a little something special for you. A little giveaway as it were. All you need to do is send an email to Bite Me podcast at. Email. Com. The other thing I'm willing to do is if you want to know how to do the calculations, and you're too busy to Google it yourself online, I have a couple of calculations I could share with you because I'm just that kind of gal.
Margaret 00:12:53 Again, you just have to shoot me an email and Bite Me podcast at Fast mail.com for all your answers and dreams to come true. Anyway, next week what we're going to be talking about. What to do if you get too high. So let's say that you have totally forgotten everything that you listened to or learned in this podcast. Or you ignore the advice completely. Well guess what? Next week's episode is just for you. Until then, have a great. Hey, friends and cannabis enthusiasts. Were you interested.

A few years ago, before we got our medical cards, my family was going camping with our kids and friends (who didn’t smoke) in a National Forest. We knew we wouldn’t be able to smoke, so I thought I’d make up some brownies. (You already know where this is going.) I had looked up some recipes online but the quantity of weed was vague and didn’t seem to make a distinction as to the quality.
On the fateful day, we’d woken up in the great outdoors, had breakfast, got the kids involved in some activity, and my wife and I each ate a half of a brownie and went about our day.
We were soooooooo stoned and we were sooooo trying to not act like it. I remember we walked down a trail to the lake and the trail kept tipping sideways and we really weren’t 100% sure where our kids or dogs were. (turns out the dogs were on the end of the leashes we were holding in our hands.)
It took most of the day to get back to a semi-reasonable state, but even then, building a fire and/or cooking on the gas stove was out of the question. And we were paranoid our friends would catch on.
We finally admitted to the wife of the other couple what happened. She laughed and laughed because it turned out that SHE had a medical card and had purchased some infused cheez-its for the trip. She hadn’t said anything because she didn’t want us to know.
I want to start making some treats again but want to know how to do it reasonable. I’d like to make something that’s like the size of a cookie, but where I can eat the whole thing without getting wasted.
You’ve come to the right place Rick! You can definitely make all kinds of great edibles that are tailored to your preferred dose so you can enjoy that cookie and still stand upright!
